Embarking on the journey of navigating and accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is often challenging. As a result, a series of toolkits have been curated to aid in this complex process. In this vein, we spotlight “QueerAbility“, an innovative toolkit tailored to assist individuals with disabilities within the LGBTQI+ community.

Crafted by ACON, a leading HIV and LGBTQI+ health organisation in NSW, QueerAbility is a comprehensive resource. Comprising seven distinct sections, this toolkit encompasses every facet of the NDIS experience, offering guidance and insights into crucial areas, including:

  • Assessing NDIS Suitability Initiating your NDIS application
  • Navigating post-application success
  • Dealing with application setbacks
  • Cultivating self-care and utilising support networks
  • Navigating appropriate language and communication
  • An array of helpful links

Irrespective of your current position within the NDIS process, the QueerAbility toolkit is primed to provide invaluable suggestions and direction. What sets this toolkit apart is its meticulous tailoring to the unique needs of the LGBTQI+ community. It is informed by the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals with disabilities, whose narratives have been instrumental in shaping this indispensable resource. By addressing the distinctive concerns of this community, QueerAbility optimises its utility within the LGBTQI+ context.

Furthermore, QueerAbility extends its guidance to managing the anxiety that often accompanies interactions with the NDIS. For instance, individuals can consider:

  • Seeking counsel from a trusted friend or confidant.
  • Engaging with a dedicated disability advocate.
  • Connecting with established organisations specialising in disability support.
