The study identified five Australian housing markets that could be improved or made more efficient with online technology to match highly specific ‘buyers’ and ‘sellers’.

A Study for matching markets in housing and housing assistance

The five markets considered are:

  • swaps and transfers in public housing;
  • disability accessible housing,
  • low-cost private rental housing brokerage,
  • apartment presales for low/mid income earners,
  • precinct-level urban redevelopment.

Furthermore, the study proposed solutions to improve the functioning of matching markets. Using the latest technologies, such as AI and algorithms, search and transaction costs can be reduced. This has given rise to new ‘platforms’ which act as more efficient and effective matching market intermediaries. They pool producers and consumers together and, using relevant information, match them in mutually rewarding ways.
