P-CEP Workshops in the Illawarra this August

This August, join our Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) workshop in the Illawarra with our Representative Advocacy team.

In recent years, we have witnessed a growing number, intensity, and duration of disasters worldwide and in Australia, with a disproportionate impact on people with disabilities.

People with disabilities are among the most neglected during disaster events, with particularly restricted access to social networks and other sources of support. A significant barrier to the safety and well-being of people with disabilities in disasters is that they have not been included in local emergency management and disaster recovery planning. To face these challenges, we invite you to participate in a free and interactive series of face-to-face and online workshops, initially in the Wollongong/Illawarra area and later in different regions of New South Wales.

The workshop is about Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP), the only emergency planning tool that helps tailor emergency preparedness to the unique support needs of people with disabilities.

P-CEP was co-designed by people with disabilities, carers, community organisations, emergency services, and researchers from University of Sydney’s Centre for Disability Research and Policy, led by Associate Professor Michelle Villeneuve and her team.

Personal preparedness is one of the most important things people can do to reduce risk and increase safety during a disaster.

During the series of workshops, you will learn about the following:

  • Person-centred approaches to emergency management
  • Self-assessment risk analysis
  • Factors that increase risks for people with disability before, during, and after an emergency
  • Strategies to reduce these risks and prepare a personalised, actionable emergency plan.
  • Create connections in your community with people interested in inclusive emergency management.

To give you the best learning experience, please fill out the form to register before 5:00pm 18 August, 2023, we will let you know the specific dates and times that best suit everyone.

If you don’t live in the Wollongong/Illawarra region and surrounds, but you are interested in participating in a PCEP workshop, please fill in the Representative Advocacy Expression of Interest form. We are going to hold more in person and online sessions for you to have the best preparation.
