Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) and Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) have a partnership which helps us work together to best support our community.

In 2018, comedian and radio presenter, Tommy Little raised over $100,000 for SCIA by running the Antarctic Ice Marathon.

SCIA presented this to NeuRA to fund life-changing research into finding a cure for spinal cord injury. Our partnership has continued since then.

Since 2018 our partnership has given us the opportunity to share with our NeuroMoves team the many benefits of Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT). Our team are now fully trained in the delivery of Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) – which has been particularly important in the pandemic.

IMT has been shown by researchers at NeuRA and Price of Wales Hospital, Randwick New South Wales, to improve lung function by around 30% in people with a spinal cord injury. It may also reduce the risk of chest infections.

NeuRA have developed a series of videos to educate people on the benefits of IMT, and how to perform it. Their aim is to help people take up IMT to reduce the risk of them getting serious lung problems like pneumonia and respiratory failure.
