    Youth Peer Support

Personalised support for young people aged 12–24 who are living with spinal cord injuries (SCI).

Personalised support for young people aged 12–24 who are living with spinal cord injuries (SCI) in New South Wales and Victoria.

    What is Youth Peer Support?

Our Youth Peer Support program is for young people aged 12–24 who are living with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Led by our Youth Peer Mentors who live with spinal injuries themselves, they know first-hand what it’s like to grow up, go to school, start work and be independent with an SCI.

When you join the program, you will be connected with one of our Youth Peer Mentors for personalised one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Participants of our program are also invited to join our online social catch ups with other young people with SCI. This is a great way for you to share your story, exchange advice and build friendships that last.

As part of our program, we will be sharing helpful videos, and other resources, discussing topics such as sport and recreational activities, travel, study and much more to help you work towards independence.

Our program is currently available for people in New South Wales and Victoria and will expand into Queensland at a later stage.

    How does it work?

    Resources

As this is a new program, please bookmark this page and check back regularly for new resources as more will be added soon.

Our Youth Support Peer Mentors have created a collection of resources to share real experiences and honest conversations about living with a spinal cord injury (SCI).

Explore the topics you care about, in your own time and at your own pace here.

You don’t have to figure out everything on your own. Let us connect you with someone who understands what growing up with an SCI is really like.

Developed with Lived Experience in Mind...

Our Youth Peer Support Program for young people with SCI is an exciting new initiative from Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA). It was co-designed with young people, their families, and healthcare professionals to make sure it reflects the real experiences, needs and goals of young people living with an SCI.

It was developed in collaboration with:

    Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service (VPRS)

    The Royal Children’s Hospital

The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI)

NSW Paediatric Spinal Outreach Service (PSOS) at Northcott

    SpineCare Foundation (SF)

    Queensland Paediatric Rehabilitation Service (QPRS)
