Everyone deserves a home where they feel safe, comfortable, and free to go about daily life on their own terms. After a spinal cord injury (SCI), that doesn’t stop being true. What changes is the practical side: routines like cooking, showers, navigating spaces all need working out in new ways, and the house itself often needs to change too. What that looks like is different for every person and every home.

Transitioning from a clinical rehabilitation setting back into a home environment is a big adjustment. Working out what home modifications you may need can be both a major investment and a real unknown. That’s what SCIA’s Transition House in Perth is for. It’s a fully modified four-bedroom home where you can stay, settle into daily routines, and test the equipment and modifications you might one day use in a home of your own.

Take a tour of the Transition House

SCIA’s Transition House, also known as Choices House Floreat, sits in the quiet inner-western Perth suburb of Floreat. It’s designed to feel like a home away from home. To give you a sense of the space and what it offers, our Community and Peer Support Coordinator Anne Currie has helped produce a guided video tour. Take a look below!

What a stay helps you work out

It’s one thing to imagine how a modified home might work. It’s another to actually live in one. A stay at the Transition House lets you find out what genuinely works for you, including answers to questions such as:

    • Would a ceiling hoist in the bedroom be a worthwhile investment?
    • Which bathroom modifications make the biggest difference, and which can wait?
    • Which smart home features would you use every day?
    • What would the kitchen need so you can cook, and host, the way you want to?
    • What would make getting in and out of your home easier?

The Transition House has been designed with these questions in mind. It won’t answer everything, no single house could, but the goal is to help you work out what suits you best before you commit, without the guesswork. And with the equipment already in place, your energy can be spent trying things out from day one.

Answers that come from lived experience

Some questions don’t have a textbook or clinical answer. Only someone who has lived experience of an SCI can give insight into what morning routines are really like, how they chose which home modifications to prioritise, or what they wish they’d known before going home.

That’s why SCIA’s Peer and Family Support team is available to guests at the Transition House. A conversation with someone who has lived experience can settle questions that weeks of research can’t, and just as often it’s the reassurance that matters. Knowing that other people have worked this out, and that you will too.
