John is 8 years old and lives with Level 2 autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). His younger brother, Tom, has severe autism. He has been diagnosed with Level 3 ASD, a severe intellectual disability, severe global developmental delay, and is non-verbal.
As the primary carer, their mother, Rose, appealed to review the funded supports available for her sons through their individual NDIS plans at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).
Rose wrote to our NDIS Appeals Advocate, Julia, after the AAT found in favour of the family:
I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest appreciation for all your hard work and dedication in supporting my sons during their NDIS tribunal cases in the last 2-3 years. Your performance has been nothing short of outstanding, and I’m truly grateful for everything you’ve done for us.
From the get-go, your expertise and knowledge in handling NDIS matters have been impressive. You quickly understood the complexities of my sons’ cases and provided clear, comprehensive guidance on the best course of action. Your ability to navigate the intricate details of the NDIS system has been a real game-changer for us.
What really stood out was your unwavering commitment to our family. You consistently went above and beyond to ensure that every aspect of our case was meticulously prepared and presented. Your thoroughness and attention to detail gave us immense confidence that we were in the best possible hands.
Your professionalism is matched by your empathy and understanding. You took the time to listen to our concerns, understand our unique challenges, and address our needs with genuine compassion. Your supportive and reassuring nature helped ease the stress and anxiety that often comes with these proceedings. You made us feel heard and valued, which is something we deeply appreciate.
During the tribunal hearings, your advocacy skills were exceptional. You articulated our position with clarity and conviction, and your arguments were well-reasoned and persuasive. Your ability to communicate effectively with all parties involved was a key factor in the positive outcome of our cases.
In addition to your professional skills, your integrity and dedication shine through. You are genuinely committed to making a difference in the lives of those you represent, and this is evident in everything you do. Your passion for your work and your clients is truly inspiring.
I wholeheartedly recommend you for any recognition or commendation you may be considered for. You are a true asset to your profession, and your exceptional work has made a significant positive impact on our family. We are forever grateful for your support and advocacy.
Thank you, Julia, for your outstanding service and for making such a difference in our lives.
This case created a legal precedent and changed the lives of this family. The Case (XVCP & NDIA) is now published on the AAT website, as well as the Australasian Legal Information Institute.
