NeuroMoves Power Up

Are you aged 14-19, living with a disability, and wanting to level-up your gym game?

PowerUp is the program for you!

This week-long holiday program, run by NeuroMoves, is designed to increase your physical strength and conditioning, empower you with the knowledge to continue with exercise and sport independently, and help you build the skills and confidence to hit workout and mobility goals in a fun and social environment!

Who can join?
This program is aimed at teens aged 14-19 who use either a manual or power wheelchair.

What to expect

Day 1

Base Exercise Principles and Goal Setting

Base Exercise Principles and Goal setting 

This session will focus on setting the groundwork for why exercise outside of therapy is important, as well as the changes faced during transitioning to independent care, identifying goals and ways exercise can support these, and setting realistic and manageable long-term goals.

Day 2

Safety Requirements and Navigating Equipment Set-Up

Safety Requirements and Navigating Equipment Set-Up

On day 2 you will learn how to use common strength-based equipment specific to your needs and begin to explore safe adaptive exercise set-ups which encourage independence and efficient workout planning. This session will also cover safety considerations in the community, navigating commercial gyms and ways to access community facilities available to you.

Day 3

Adherence and Self-Management Strategies

Adherence and Self-Management Strategies

Session 3 will explore key exercise principles specific to individuals in wheelchairs and young teens, how to manage your program needs, and ways to set up key movement patterns and sport specific strength exercises according to your goals set earlier in the week.

Day 4

Programming Basics and Efficacy Strategies

Programming Basics and Efficacy Strategies

The last day will explore the key elements to consistency and how to self-manage your progress through tracking and adherence strategies. Our practical skills will wrap up with finalising your individual base programs, as well as learning self-assessment tools for ongoing independence in the gym!

PowerUp trainer Isobel Ahern
Isobel Ahern, Exercise Physiologist

Isobel is one of our Exercise Physiologist based at our Clyde and Penrith clinics. Isobel has over 3 years’ experience working in paediatric and young adolescent care, with a keen interest in strength and sport specific training, as well as functional movement skills.

Isobel is passionate in helping young teens learn to understand how their bodies move, building confidence and independence to encourage them to be ready for any opportunity coming their way!
