Recently I’ve learned that a quite a few people with an SCI have not returned to work because they were worried about how their disability would be perceived. Has anyone else experienced this?
Hi phatboyslim,
This has definitely been a concern for me. Apart from that, finding flexible work that will allow me to attend physiotherapy sessions has also been a bit of a challenge. Also, finding a job in an accessible office has been a challenge within itself. Although I’ve been lucky enough to land a couple of contract roles since my surgery last year, they have been remote which was a little isolating. I’m keen to hear if others have had similar experiences!
I used to be under the assumption of why would an employer employ me before he/she would employ an able bodied applicant but since starting a job with SCIA and meeting other wheelies who are employed has changed my opinion. Not only has SCIA given me the opportunity to work again there are so many other employers who do employ people with a disability out there I have come to realise, you just need to put yourself out there and explore all opportunities. Getting involved with an employment agency can also assist you as well as upskilling at Tafe and doing a course. Inclusion in the workforce has definitely come along way over recent times!
