CHOICES provides a place where a person undergoing inpatient rehabilitation following a spinal cord injury, their family and their friends, can stay at for up to seven days at a time. As well as providing some time away from the hospital environment and the opportunity to reconnect with loved ones, there is also the opportunity to gain experience and learn new skills to maximise independence before being discharged from hospital. The accommodation and care is provided free of charge for eligible members of SCIA.
The CHOICES apartment is located in Little Bay, in Sydney’s south east. It is a fully accessible apartment located close to shops and has a huge balcony overlooking a golf course and the ocean. The apartment has been modified with new equipment and aids to assist people with a disability. This apartment will allow us to continue delivering the CHOICES program while we redevelop a recently purchased home in Gymea into a state-of-the-art accessible home. The apartment will be used temporarily so that newly injured people and their families can have a break from hospital, and prepare for the transition into the community following discharge.
To be eligible to stay at CHOICES you need to:
- Have a spinal cord injury
- Be a current inpatient at a registered medical facility
- Have clearance for temporary leave from your treating health professionals
- Have someone over the age of 18, accompanying you throughout the duration of your stay
- Be a member of SCIA
The property SCIA has purchased in Gymea, Sydney's south, will be developed into a new CHOICES home. SCIA is excited about building a new property for our members and their families. The property is on a big sunny block, close to shops, cafes, the train station and parklands. Plans are now in motion to knock down the existing house and redevelop the site as a showcase for the principles of accessibility and universal design. Stay in touch with SCIA to hear more about the developments – follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
SCIA clients and their families also have access to an accessible vehicle while staying at the CHOICES apartment. For more information please click here.
