Accommodation

Accommodation

SCI operates a number of accommodation facilities, some of which are supported, in and around Sydney and Coffs Harbour. Where no staff are onsite, the individual residents are responsible for arranging their own personal care through the Home Care Service or, if eligible, the Attendant Care Program.

A new centre at Collaroy is currently being developed. Its separate self-contained units will each have its own private entrance and access to common areas for all residents. One unit will provide family accommodation and two of the units will be equipped to cater for people who are ventilator dependent.

The new centre will be transitional in nature and will provide a rehabilitation focus designed to enable residents to move into community living as soon as possible.

We'll keep you posted as planning for the new facility progresses!

Community support and advice

We also provide accommodation support and advice to those living independently in the community. We can advise people with disabilities on new home or home modification design.

Contact the Senior Community Services Officer on (02) 9661 8855; 1800 819 775 or email support@scia.org.au.

Emergency service

An after hours and daytime Emergency Service is available to people with severe physical disabilities living in the Randwick/ Botany Municipality. Clients must register and undergo an initial assessment to establish eligibility.

Referral to the service can be initiated by the client, family members, health workers, medical practitioners, special units i.e. Spinal Units or other community service providers.

Initial referrals should be made to the Residential Services Manager on (02) 9661 8855; 1800 819 775 or email accommodation@scia.org.au

There is no register of accessible free market accommodation. Sometimes a keyword search for wheelchair or disabled gets some results on domain.com.au

Unfortunately there is no assistance for pensioners to take on a loan - home or personal finance. That is why so many are forced to rely on public housing. As far as I know there is no direct advocacy on this matter but there is activity around the area of affordable housing. If you wish to become involved a good place to start is the Council of Social Service of New South Wales (NCOSS).
